He also informed us that someone had already canceled their flight earlier that day, leaving the decision to us. Our instructor assessed the weather conditions, noting that while it would be windy, it would remain relatively stable for the next five hours. Despite the weather constantly changing, we were pleased to see it gradually improving over time.Īs we observed the clouds moving towards the north, we decided to meet up with our instructor at the school to plot our course.

We spent over an hour in the car, keeping an eye on the clouds moving over the mountains and checking the airport’s METAR and TAF weather reports. The weather conditions were not favorable, with cloudy skies, light rain, and 30-knot winds from the Southeast. Upon our arrival at Keflavík International Airport on October 12, 2021, we proceeded to Reykjavík City Airport (BIRK) the following day, where the Flight academy is situated. We were eagerly anticipating the adventure that lay ahead, while also keeping our fingers crossed for at least one day of good weather. Eventually, I was able to secure a Cessna 172 for a two-day rental period, knowing that the Icelandic weather is unpredictable all year round. Nevertheless, they did offer me the opportunity to participate in dual flying, which I agreed to. I contacted them to inquire about rental services, but was informed that they only provide rental services to their members. I continued my search until I finally came across the only current website available, which was from the Reykjavik Flight Academy. However, I soon discovered that most of these offers were outdated, with some organizations no longer in operation. After some searching, I came across references to organizations that had Cessna aircraft in their fleet. I searched on various local websites, hoping to find some useful information. This was mainly due to the country’s small size and the fact that there are not many commercial rental companies available. I encountered some difficulty when I was looking for a rental aircraft in Iceland. So, my friend and I planned a 12-day roundtrip for October 2021, and I couldn’t wait to make this long-held dream a reality. As a pilot, I saw this as an exciting opportunity to add a unique adventure to my logbook that would stay with me forever. After returning from Norway three years ago, I had also been eager to visit the country for a vacation. For years, I had dreamed of flying over Iceland and taking in the gorgeous scenery from high above.
